Major Progress Achieved with Samples from China Space Station

The scientific experiment samples to China space station, by Professor Jin Min’s team from the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE), were successfully launched into orbit aboard the Mengtian lab module from Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan on October 31, 2022. With the assistance of astronauts, the samples completed the planned microgravity scientific experiments in space and were successfully returned to Earth aboard the Shenzhou-15 manned spacecraft, which landed at the Dongfeng Landing Site on June 4, 2023.

After obtaining the returned space experiment samples, Professor Jin’s team promptly collaborated with multiple leading research institutions across China to conduct a systematic and in-depth scientific investigation lasting more than two years. Through joint efforts and interdisciplinary collaboration, the team has recently achieved a series of significant breakthroughs in related research fields.

Major achievement 1: Discovery of sliding ferroelectricity based on high-quality inse crystals grown in space.

This research was recently published in the internationally renowned journal Nature Communications (a top-tier journal in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Q1, with an impact factor of 16.2).

Major achievement 2: Fabrication of high-performance field-effect transistor devices using low-defect inse crystals grown in space.

This research was recently published in the internationally renowned journal Advanced Materials (a top-tier CAS Q1 journal, with an impact factor of 26.8).

The above achievements were accomplished through collaboration between SDJU, CAS Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, East China Normal University, Shandong University, and other partner institutions. These research achievements were supported by the Central Military Commission, the China Manned Space Agency, and Program of Shanghai Academic Research Leader.
