SDJU Postgraduates Completed Europe Study Tour

23/09/2025

During 2025 summer, our university organized in-depth study programs for postgraduate students to Germany and Italy. Focusing on key SDJU development areas such as intelligent manufacturing, energy equipment, and advanced control, the tour provided deep academic exchange and engineering practice, effectively broadening global perspectives and enhancing capabilities in cross-cultural communication and complex problem-solving.

German Program - European Project Semester

Three postgraduates from the School of Electrical Engineering (SEE) participated in the four-and-a-half-month European Project Semester (EPS) at the University of Applied Sciences Saarbrücken Germany. Centered on Embedded Systems and Engineering Management, the program addressed intelligent control and system optimization within the context of Industry 4.0, integrating professional coursework, corporate practice, and cultural immersion.

Through courses like Arduino Lab, Sensor Systems, and Engineering Management, students mastered key hardware development and system simulation technologies. During corporate practice, they contributed to R&D of Automated Lifting Device for Dielectric Elastomer Testing and a Smart Optimization System for Energy Consumption. Guided by German mentors through rigorous technical reviews and multiple design iterations, the students not only advanced their skills in motion control, algorithm implementation, and energy optimization but also gained a deep appreciation of German industrial culture for its emphasis on data precision, documentation standards, and rigorous process.

The program effectively strengthened SDJU students’ systems thinking in high-end equipment manufacturing and their ability to tackle complex engineering challenges. It served as a significant international practice under SDJU’s dual training entities, dual faculty teams, dual competences mechanism for cultivating Excellent Field Engineers, while also preparing high-caliber talent with German industrial experience to meet the needs of Shanghai's world-class high-end equipment industrial cluster.

Italian Program- CI-LAM Summer School

Two postgraduates from SME and SEE joined the CI-LAM Summer School in Italy, hosted by Tsinghua University, for a two-week academic exchange on Green Energy and Intelligent Manufacturing. Combining a hackathon competition, visits to leading enterprises, high-level lectures, and cultural activities, the program showcased the innovation ecosystem of “Made in Italy” in precision machinery, digital twins, and industry-education integration. Students from around the world, despite diverse cultural backgrounds, experienced the universality of engineering as a common language. SDJU students actively engaged in international teams, demonstrating initiative in technical discussions and project collaboration. They not only aligned their professional knowledge with global frontiers but also showed marked improvement in cross-cultural communication and collaborative innovation.

Visits to global leading enterprises such as ABB, Schneider Electric, and Tenaris provided systematic exposure to flexible production lines, digital twin operation systems, and precision opto-mechatronic control technologies. Lectures by Chinese and international experts on green industrial IoT, edge intelligence, and robotics broadened academic horizons and research ideas. Bergamo tech travel and visits of joint laboratories offered direct insight into the operation of deep industry-university-research integration platforms.

The program significantly enhanced SDJU students' comprehensive abilities in intelligent control, energy optimization, and cross-cultural collaboration, with notable progress in communication, teamwork, and international engineering mindset. This initiative represents a key measure by SDJU to advance the construction of the China-Italy laboratory platform and strengthen the cultivation of international perspective and teamwork skills, while also providing practical support for developing a cradle for field engineers driving regional industrial upgrading.

The 2025 summer programs formed a critical part of SDJU’s strategy to deepen the cultivation of international talent and align with global advanced manufacturing systems. Through these high-quality overseas experiences in Germany and Italy, students not only acquired cutting-edge knowledge in advanced manufacturing and energy equipment but also honed their engineering practice, innovative thinking, and collaborative skills in multicultural settings. This fully reflects our university’s commitment to being rooted in Lin-gang, serving Shanghai, and contributing to high-end equipment industry development. SDJU will continue to expand deep cooperation with overseas universities and enterprises, accelerating its development into a distinctive applied university and a highland for cultivating outstanding talents.
