First SDJU Student Donor of Hematopoietic Stem Cell

23/02/2025

As the early spring gradually warms, the passion of warm-heartedness grows stronger. Shortly after the Spring Festival, Tan Hao, a 2024 graduate student from School of Mechanical Engineering, successfully donated hematopoietic stem cells with a spirit of selfless dedication, bringing hope of life to an unknown blood disease patient. This marked the first-ever hematopoietic stem cell donation by on-campus students of our university. During the process, Red Cross Society of China Shanghai Branch, Red Cross Society of China Shanghai Pudong New Area Branch, and SDJU leaders and faculty members, extended their sincere respect and appreciation to this campus hero.

Tan Hao is passionate about public welfare. During his participation in voluntary blood donation activities, he learned about the vital importance of hematopoietic stem cell donation in saving lives. Motivated by this awareness, he resolutely joined the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP), becoming a proud volunteer. In the second half of 2024, when Tan received a call from Red Cross, learning that he was a match for a blood disease patient, he unhesitatingly agreed to donate. With love and a strong sense of responsibility, he embarked on the journey of hematopoietic stem cell donation.

After completing necessary preliminary steps--including initial matching, high-resolution one-on-one matching tests with the patient, and pre-donation physical examinations--Tan Hao was admitted to hospital four days in advance, right after the Spring Festival. He began the final preparations for the hematopoietic stem cell donation. On February 12, after more than five hours of collection, he successfully completed the donation. Throughout the process, Tan Hao demonstrated great strength and optimism. Reflecting on the experience, he said, “Being able to save a life with my hematopoietic stem cells is a very meaningful moment in my life. I feel honored and proud.”

During the visit, Zhu Hongchun, Deputy Secretary of CPC SDJU Committee and Vice President, inquired in detail about Tan Hao’s physical condition and highly praised his noble act. He affirmed that Tan Hao’s selfless deed not only saved a life but also conveyed the profound kindness of humanity, reflecting the social responsibility and spirit of youth students at SDJU. His actions serve as an inspiring example for the entire university community. Staff from Office of Student Affairs, Graduate Student Affairs Office, SDJU CCYL Committee and School of Mechanical Engineering also attended the visit to extend their support and appreciation.

Under the leadership of CPC SDJU Committee, our university has carried out volunteer blood sample collection for CMDP for four consecutive years. A total of more than 700 faculty members and students successfully joined the registry, and three SDJU students, including two alumni, have successfully donated hematopoietic stem cells. Our university has repeatedly been recognized for its efforts, earning honors such as “Shanghai Model Collective for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation Volunteer Recruitment” and “Pudong New Area Collective Contribution Award for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation.” These achievements further promote the Red Cross spirit ofHumanity, Fraternity, and Dedication, fostering a positive and compassionate campus culture.
