SEIE Students Won Multiple National First Prizes in Mathematical Contests in Modeling

05/03/2024

During the past winter vacation, some graduate students from School of Electronics and Information Engineering (SEIE) visited relatives and friends, sharing their academic achievement, and learned about latest developments around hometown; some had interns in enterprises and enhanced capabilities in practice; while those in research groups made full use of their vacation time, continued their study in intervals of relaxation. They broadened horizons, enhanced abilities. In SDJU’s nurturing and innovative environment, they engaged in dedicated team work, diligent research, and active exploration, resulting in rapid growth and fruitful achievements.

In the 2nd “Huashu Cup” International Mathematical Contest in Modeling, two SEIE graduate student teams, guided by Professor Zhigang Lian, participated. In the end, both Team A composed of Nan Jia, Zhanhao Hua, and Xiangyun Chen, and Team B composed of Ziyi Yuan and Xing’ao Luo, received Meritorious Award (First Prize). The contest was hosted by Tianjin Institute of Future and Prediction Science and co-organized by Big Data and Mathematical Modeling Committee of China Society for Future Studies. It is an English-only university discipline competition, aiming to enhance students’ abilities to use mathematics to solve practical problems and improve their scientific writing skills.

For this contest, SEIE teams analyzed data of photovoltaic power generation from the past 15 years, established a comprehensive evaluation model. They investigated the feasibility of constructing photovoltaic power station, explored the maximum potential of photovoltaic generation in China, and predicted the development trends of achieving carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality in China based on their analysis. They also examined the impact of photovoltaic power generation on the development of China’s power industry.

In addition, Professor Lian also guided SEIE graduate student terms for the 13rd Asia and Pacific Mathematical Contest in Modeling (APMCM), which attracted 9,700 teams from 969 universities. Both teams, one by Ziyi Yuan, Weixing Zuo, and Xiangyun Chen, and the other including Xing’ao Luo, Qi Shi, and Yi Yan, both received national Third Prize.

Participating in competitions is not only a test of acquired knowledge but also an exercise in practical scientific skills, teamwork, diligent research and innovative spirit. It also enhances the comprehensive abilities of problem identification, analysis, and solution refinement. This busy and fulfilling winter vacation was meaningful and fruitful for SEIE students. With the new semester underway, students will continue to strive, progress together, surpass themselves, and accumulate strength to realize the dream of a scientifically strong nation for future technological endeavors.
