Now Essential Science Indicators (ESI) is internationally accepted as a basic analysis and evaluation tool to measure performance of scientific research and track trend of scientific development. Highly cited papers are those ranked at top 1% of related disciplines according to ESI citation frequency, i.e. globally top 1% most cited papers of certain academic fields during a year. The number of highly cited papers is one of the significant indexes measuring an institute’s scientific research influence, and it also well reflects the influence of a scientific paper.
