Abstract:

This lecture will provide a brief introduction to Technical Writing as it is practiced in Europe, the U.S., and Canada. Based on his thirty years of experience teaching Technical Writing courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level, Professor Howard will overview how Technical Writing has changed from primarily print-based manuals and product guides to a wider variety of document types and media. He will show how meeting customers’ needs for simple, easily accessible, and easy to comprehend guides for high tech products and services is creating many new opportunities for technical writers in the workplace. He will also discuss how making ease of use a primary benchmark for the documents and information products technical writers create not only improves the employability of technical writers, but it also creates opportunities for technical writers to improve the quality of their customers’ lives.
