Major Achievement in the 18th “Challenge Cup” NUC-EASTW Black Tech Demo

12/10/2023

In an exciting breakthrough, SDJU students have received a coveted “Star Level” evaluation in the Black Tech Demo of the 18th “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Competition on Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works (NUC-EASTW). The event was held in Xiaoshan of Ningbo in Zhejiang from October 8 to 10. The wining project Expert of Airborne Life Detection – UAV Life Detection Radar was developed under the guidance of SEIE (School of Electronics and Engineering) teacher Chen Zhimin. This achievement was significant as it allowed SDJU to participate in the National Black Tech Demo alongside prestigious institutions such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, and University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, signifying a significant advancement for our university in this field. Li Xiaoxiao, Secretary of CCYL SEIE Branch, Yu Feiqiao from Class 2261, and Ji Mintong, participated the demo on-site.

The project showcased was a UAV life detection radar, completed jointly by five SEIE graduate students. What sets this project apart from similar products in the market is its versatility—it can be mounted on unmanned aircraft, mobile vehicles, and even used as a handheld device. The design is both compact and flexible, making it suitable for various applications. A key innovation of the project is the adoption of a self-developed interference cancellation algorithm, which effectively eliminates interference caused by UAV flight vibrations. Additionally, the millimeter-wave RF and antenna modules are independently designed, significantly reducing the product’s volume and weight while achieving complete component localization.

The “Challenge Cup” NUC-EASTW is a highly regarded, exemplary national event jointly organized by Central Committee of Chinese Communist Youth League, China Association for Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, All-China Students’ Federation, and provincial people’s governments. Held every two years, it is often referred to as the “Olympic Games” of technological innovation among contemporary college students. As an integral part of “Challenge Cup” series, the Black Tech special event mainly focuses on cutting-edge technologies, encouraging young students to engage in disruptive, advanced, and innovative research and emphasizing the fusion of innovative frontiers and practical applications. The primary criteria for evaluation include creativity, scientific rigor, and real-world applicability.

Our university attaches great importance to “Challenge Cup”, continuously seeking out and nurturing scientific and creative works, and constantly strives to improve students’ innovation consciousness and practical ability. CCYL SDJU Committee, Education Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and various other SDJU departments, along with dedicated teachers and students from secondary schools regard the “Challenge Cup” competition a platform to serve our country through science and innovation, and a nice chance to promote both teaching and learning, as well as the high-quality development of SDJU.
